Troubleshooting Your Lawn Problems 101

Updated: May 8, 2023

How to Keep Your Lawn Safe and Healthy

As a homeowner, you know the importance of having a healthy, beautiful lawn.

But keeping it in its prime can be tough.

From pesky weeds to brown patches, many different types of problems can occur!

Thankfully, there are easy solutions to help you keep your yard looking its best.

As your lawn’s best friend, we’ll break down some of these common lawn problems and how to fix them. Let’s get to it!

Weeds, Weeds Everywhere!

Weeds! They are the most common lawn problems and can be a real nuisance if they are not kept in check. They can find a way to return, no matter how often you mow your lawn!

One of the most important steps you can take to combat these pesky plants is to ensure your grass is healthy and thick enough to be resistant.

Also, using an herbicide with either glyphosate or triclopyr as the active ingredients are best!

They are designed specifically to target undesired plants without causing harm to the surrounding grass.

If your grass has been turning yellow, that can be an eye sore!

But before freaking out, it’s essential to analyze the cause of the issue.

Start by checking the pH levels in your soil because, in some cases, off-balance acidity or alkalinity is the culprit here.

Depending on your soil type, you might need to take corrective action by applying certain compounds like lime or sulfur to even it out. However, if the pH levels are fine, it may be time to reseed or re-sod those yellow patches!

Whenever possible, try doing this during the cooler temperatures of fall months so that newly planted grass seedlings can grow and thrive without issues.

Fungus Among Us

Don't let the words fungus and lawn make you shudder!

Keeping your turf healthy and fungi-free is simpler than you might think.

Fungal diseases like brown patches and dollar spots have been known to take over large swaths of grass if they aren’t taken care of quickly.

Luckily, there are some simple steps that you can take to prevent these troublesome fungi from ruining your yard.

A great place to start is by following a regular mowing schedule and ensuring enough airflow between each blade of grass so that excess moisture can naturally dry out after a rainstorm. Removing standing pools of water in your yard will also help ensure that fungus spores cannot latch on and spread out.

If fungicides need to be applied, chlorothalonil products tend to work best at protecting your turf and getting rid of existing fungal diseases.

This will protect your turf from future onslaughts of fungi and immediately kill off any existing diseases.

Brown Patches

Brown patches are no fun to look at, and they can be a pain to deal with.

Thankfully, you can do a few things to keep them from appearing on your lawn.

For starters, always make sure you're providing your grass with the right amount of water and fertilizer that it needs–not just in one particular area but across the whole yard!

Additionally, training your furry friends to urinate elsewhere instead of the same spot over and over again will help prevent these unsightly dry spots from popping up.

With a little TLC, you can look forward to a healthy-looking yard all year long!

Thatch Buildup

If you're noticing an odd spongy feeling in the grass in your yard, it may be time to check for thatch buildup.

It happens when grass clippings, roots, and other materials pile up between the soil surface and the green leaves of grass. When left untreated, this can prevent essential nutrients your grass needs from filtering down to its roots, resulting in stunted growth and poor-looking lawns.

No need to worry, though! Fortunately, there's a simple solution!

Just use a rake or dethatching tool to remove any excess material from the surface of your grass so that it can receive all the air, water, and nutrients it needs!

Wrapping It Up

Keeping your lawn healthy doesn't have to be complicated or stressful!

It all starts with prevention by having healthy soil, which leads to healthy turfgrass, fewer weeds and fungal diseases, and other lawn problems.

While fertilizers and herbicides can help in a pinch, identifying lawn problems and knowing how to prevent them from happening again is the most efficient way of caring for your grass, which means regular maintenance should stay at the top of the priority list!
